Water and Preventive Maintenance Foundation is a 2 day introductory course which covers key concepts of water treatment systems and preventive maintenance of coffee machines, as well as certain practical skills required to safely apply this knowledge.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
● Identify typical components and describe the function of common water treatment systems.
● Define key water parameters and describe their potential effects on equipment function.
● List water quality recommendations.
● Describe expected effects of common water treatment methods on water quality.
● Demonstrate measurement of incoming water to determine composition.
● Demonstrate common steps for maintaining a water treatment system.
● Identify typical wear components in a traditional espresso machine, batch brewer, and coffee grinder.
● Describe the goals of a preventive maintenance program.
● List the tools and supplies needed to perform preventive maintenance on coffee equipment.
● Demonstrate simple preventive maintenance steps for a traditional espresso machine, batch brewer, and coffee grinder.
Students who successfully complete the practical and online written exams will earn credit towards SCA Skills Diplomas.
Note: This course does not provide electrical or plumbing certifications.

Simon James has over 24 years experience in the coffee industry as a barista, cafe manager, and trainer, and has been an Authorised SCA Trainer since 2015. He has been a lead instructor at SCAE and SCA Barista Camps in Europe and Asia, and was the Lead Content Creator for the SCA Coffee Skills Program Brewing curriculum.
Comprehensive presentations and workbooks are carefully created to cater for people of different learning abilities, and from different cultures.
Classes are small so that all students get the attention they need to understand the theory and practical skills.

Cancellations & Refunds
If the organiser cancels the class:
You are entitled to a full refund.
If you can't attend the class:
You’re welcome to send someone in your place.

- A refund can be requested 21 days before class starts. An admin fee of AU$20.00 applies.
- A transfer can be requested 21 days before the class starts. Free of charge.
No changes will be allowed after these times.

Once your booking is confirmed, we begin the process of preparing your class. Although we understand unexpected events or illness may require that you reschedule or cancel your booking, our refund policy reflects the costs incurred in the preparation of the scheduled class.
Electronic Devices in the Classroom
Electronic devices (including mobile phones) should be switched off or silent to avoid distractions in the classroom.
However, your instructor may allow you to use a device for translation assistance where necessary.

Course Cancellation
